Mortal Kombat 2 Digital Release: When Will It Be Streaming on HBO Max? (2026)

Mortal Kombat 2 is coming to digital platforms, but when will the newest Mortal Kombat movie be streaming? The sequel to the 2021 reboot of the Mortal Kombat film franchise, Mortal Kombat II, is heading to premium VOD as it finishes up a successful theatrical run at the box office. The earlier film was released just as some movie theaters started opening up again post-Covid vaccine, and did decent numbers given the then-precarious box office conditions. Mortal Kombat II, released as more moviegoers have returned to theaters, has become the highest-grossing Mortal Kombat movie worldwide, though adjusting for inflation still favors the first-ever Kombat movie, released back in 1995. Returning director Simon McQuoid also seems to have learned some lessons from his experience making the first film, namely that a movie called Mortal Kombat ought to actually feature the fabled Mortal Kombat tournament in said movie. Personally, I think this is a refreshing change from the first film, which was more of a character-driven story rather than an action-packed fight movie. What makes this particularly fascinating is that the first film did not feature the tournament, and was instead focused on preventing it from occurring. Mortal Kombat II is more of a proper fight movie with a bunch of fantasy trimmings, following two lead fighters: The profane and wisecracking Johnny Cage, a faded martial-arts star recruited for this good-versus-evil tournament; and the tough Princess Kitana, who is working undercover to defeat the evil emperor who conquered her realm. In my opinion, this gives the movie equal measures of action-comedy slapstick and palace-intrigue fantasy, two elements that shouldn't necessarily work well together but complement each other in such a lavishly silly movie. If you missed Mortal Kombat II at your local theater but don't want to pay $20 for a premium rental, we have some information about when the sequel will be streaming on HBO Max, where the original film became one of the service's top titles back in 2021. Mortal Kombat II will be released on digital, on premium video-on-demand, on Tuesday, June 9 at 12 a.m. Eastern Time (which is also 9 p.m. Pacific Time on June 8). You'll be able to buy or rent the film on digital platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango At Home, and more. The film has a suggested price of $24.99 to buy a digital copy, or $19.99 to rent for 48 hours. Mortal Kombat II will also be released on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD on July 28. The physical release will come with behind-the-scenes special features, and there will be an exclusive steelbook packaging for the 4K UHD available at Walmart. Eventually, Mortal Kombat II will make its way to the default streaming home of all Warner Bros. and New Line productions: HBO Max. This doesn't mean the movie will always or only ever stream on HBO Max, but it will be the movie's first subscription-streaming stop, and the default location for it even as other licensing deals move it around the internet. Typically, Warner Bros. and/or New Line movies arrive on HBO Max around two and a half months, or about 75 days, after their theatrical debut, or around a month and a change after PVOD, though those windows vary a little more. If it holds true for Mortal Kombat II, the movie will arrive on HBO Max around July 23 or so. This is also consistent with the recent convention that Warner Bros.-owned movies show up on HBO around the time of their physical media release. This isn't guaranteed, but Mortal Kombat II should stream within about a week of that date. That gives you plenty of time to get psyched up by constantly bumping the greatest theme song ever known. And if you want to get prepared to enter Kombat, the other three live-action movies are all streaming on HBO Max right now, along with a bunch of animated features. Stream Mortal Kombat (1995) on HBO Max.
